Jackie Boudreau Kinsey
Ashfield, MA.
b. 1973
Jackie Boudreau Kinsey was born and raised in Springfield, MA and attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While earning her BFA in Painting, Jackie studied under professors Jeanette Cole and Richard Yarde. She resides in the hills of western Massachusetts.
Jackie’s paintings display an internal response to the landscape. The study of light on the land and the poetry that is revealed, both inform and inspire her work. Jackie does most of her preliminary drawing and painting outside and then returns to the studio, where she uncovers nature’s inherent abstractions.
I am interested in the transcendent experience of light on the land and how the landscape can operate as a metaphor for the human condition. Through painting, I explore the ways light and shadow alter perception—how they compress and expand time, and how memory is shaped by what is revealed and what is obscured.
I have always felt deep connections to places. Growing up in Springfield, Massachusetts was very formative and I grew attached to any open space or overgrown lot that I could find. The trees of my childhood became kindred spirits early on. Part of my painting process consists of quiet walks in the woods and also the long drive into work, where I study the early morning and dusk light on the land. Observing and absorbing are truly at the core of my process. Most of my preliminary drawing and painting are done outside and then finished in the studio. I am interested in shadow and light as metaphor for the human condition. My connection to place is rooted in memory, the transience of time, and in-between spaces. I am interested in painting as poetry and landscape as metaphor.
